Review:The Alpina D3 is perhaps the most desirable saloon car yet in the 'real world'
Review of the BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo

According to its maker, the Alpina D3 is the world’s fastest diesel production car, which is hardly surprising given that it mates the regular BMW 3-series’ four-door bodyshell with 345bhp and, get this, the hardly insignificant matter of 516lb ft of torque.

The D3’s trump card, though, isn’t its smooth ride and handling, or its tidal wave of mid-range performance, or even its quietly breathtaking good looks. It is instead the fact that it manages to combine all of the above with 50mpg real-world economy – and a price tag that is the right side of £50,000. And that makes it one of the most desirable four door cars that sensible money has ever been able to buy, if not THE most desirable.

`What’s not to like – 50mpg, 0-62mph in 4.6sec and a sub-£50k price`
Steve Sutcliffe
